MIHAS 2017: KLCC hosts a record-setting showcase of the global halal economy

MIHAS 2017, the 14th edition of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase, brought the world’s halal ecosystem together at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), reaffirming Malaysia’s role as a convenor and catalyst for halal trade.

The four-day event ran 5–8 April 2017, with the opening officiated by then Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Staged squarely in the heart of Kuala Lumpur at KLCC, MIHAS 2017 was designed as an end-to-end halal marketplace spanning food and beverages, non-food, services, and e-commerce—a deliberate four-cluster segmentation that reflected how the halal economy now extends far beyond food compliance into logistics, finance, and digital trade.

According to MATRADE’s post-event report, the exhibition welcomed over 576 exhibitors from 33 countries, including first-time participation from Finland and Austria—a signal of growing interest from non-Muslim-majority markets. Across the four days, 22,744 visitors—from companies, associations, and foreign delegations—passed through the halls.

Malaysia’s own government and agencies were visible throughout, underscoring national backing for the halal agenda. JAKIM, for example, highlighted its presence at MIHAS 2017 on its official portal, which also confirms the 5–8 April dates and the KLCC venue.

Business outcomes: RM1.01 billion in total sales

Beyond footfall, MIHAS 2017 delivered concrete trade. MATRADE reports RM1.01 billion in total sales generated from two streams: RM709 million from the exhibition floor and RM300 million via its flagship International Sourcing Programme (INSP).

The INSP—held on 4 April 2017 ahead of the show—brought 165+ foreign buyers from 44 countries to meet 418 Malaysian companies in 2,000+ pre-arranged sessions, demonstrating MIHAS’s role as a true deal-making engine.

These numbers matter: even with a leaner operating budget than the previous year, MATRADE noted a higher return on investment, signaling better targeting of international buyers and improved matching quality.

What stood out on the floor

Innovation was a clear theme. Exhibitors showcased technology-driven products and services, particularly from European participants, pointing to a halal market that prizes supply-chain integrity, product safety, and digital enablement just as much as certification.

The Malaysia Islamic Lifestyle Exhibition (MILE) ran in parallel, broadening the conversation to fashion, personal care, and lifestyle—areas where halal principles intersect with global consumer trends.

The show also drew eight foreign trade delegations—from bodies such as Thailand’s Federation of Halal Entrepreneurs of the Five Southern Border Provinces, Taiwan’s Bio & Pharmaceuticals Industries Promotion Office, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry—indicating MIHAS’s reach across Asia and into Africa.

Policy signal from the opening

At the opening, national leaders emphasized the importance of mutual recognition among halal certification bodies to reduce friction in cross-border trade—an issue of growing urgency given the proliferation of certifiers worldwide.

The policy tone complemented MIHAS’s practical trade mission: streamline standards where possible, and help exporters meet demand across diverse markets.

Why MIHAS 2017 mattered

First, market validation: surpassing RM1 billion in total sales at a time of tighter budgets shows that curated buyer-seller matching can unlock outsized outcomes for SMEs and established brands alike.

Second, ecosystem depth: the show’s four-cluster structure and the presence of lifestyle segments illustrated a maturing halal economy that spans ingredients, finished goods, logistics, finance, and digital commerce.

Third, globalization of halal: with 33 participating countries and new European entrants, MIHAS 2017 marked halal’s continuing shift from a niche certification marker to a broader proxy for quality, safety, ethics, and traceability.

Finally, MIHAS 2017 set the stage for future expansion. MATRADE closed the 2017 edition by announcing that MIHAS 2018 would move to MITEC, reflecting the event’s growth trajectory and the need for additional capacity—another signal that demand for halal-compliant products and services was still climbing.

The bottom line

Held at KLCC from 5–8 April 2017, MIHAS 2017 combined scale, diversity, and structure to turn meetings into measurable trade: over 576 exhibitors from 33 countries, 22,744 visitors, and RM1.01 billion in sales across exhibition and business-matching.

It wasn’t just a showcase; it functioned as a market-making platform—one that helped Malaysian exporters and international buyers find each other efficiently while pushing the halal conversation into advanced manufacturing, services, and digital channels.
